Where to Get Free STD Testing: Clinics and Health Departments
Updated 2026-11-04
Free STD testing is widely available in the U.S. through health departments, community clinics and nonprofit organizations. In our directory of 12,104 testing locations from the CDC's NPIN database, 3,495 list free STI and/or HIV testing and 8,600 list a sliding-scale fee based on income.
Where to find free STD testing
- Local and state health departments. Many run sexual health clinics. 1,198 health-department locations in our data list free testing.
- Community health centers and family planning clinics. These often charge on a sliding scale, so the cost may be low or nothing, depending on income.
- Community and LGBTQ+ organizations. Many offer free HIV testing, sometimes with rapid results.
- Free home kits. HIV.gov notes you may be able to order a free HIV self-test through CDC's Together Take Me Home program, subject to availability.
In our data, 3,088 locations list a free HIV test and 1,510 list a free STI test. "Free" can come with eligibility rules (for example age, income or where you live), so call ahead and ask what is covered.

Tips
- On any city page, tick "Show only locations that list free STI/HIV testing" to filter the list.

- If you have insurance, HIV.gov notes HIV screening is covered by most plans, including most Medicaid programs, without a co-pay.
